Child supplement
Parents with a low income can receive a supplement to child benefit - the child supplement.
Who is entitled?
Parents are entitled to child supplement for their unmarried children under the age of 25 who live in their household if
- child benefit or a comparable benefit, for example from abroad, is received for these children,
- the family's monthly income reaches the minimum income threshold,
- the income and assets to be taken into account are not too high and
- the family's needs are covered by the payment of the child supplement and there is therefore no entitlement to citizen's allowance.
Further information on the child supplement
Amount of the benefit:
The maximum possible child supplement for each child living in the same household is €292 per month from 1 January 2024. The child's income (e.g. maintenance payments or pension) and assets are offset against the child supplement to varying degrees and reduce the amount of the child supplement.
Minimum income limit:
The minimum income limit is reached when the monthly gross income (e.g. from employment, unemployment benefit or sickness benefit) is €900 for parents and €600 for single parents. Housing benefit, child benefit and child supplement are not taken into account.
Avoidance of need for assistance:
The calculated child supplement, together with the family's other income and assets, must be sufficient to cover the needs of the entire family so that there is no entitlement to citizen's allowance. The needs of a family are made up of the standard needs, the additional needs (according to SGB II) and the housing costs.
The KiZ-Lotsen can be used to determine whether you are entitled to the child supplement.
Further information can be found in the "Child supplement information sheet" from the Family Benefits Office.
As the regulations on the child supplement are quite complicated, if you have any questions or uncertainties, please contact the service telephone of the Family Benefits Office (0800 4 5555 30, toll-free) or the Family Service Office of Paderborn University.
