Award for excellent Dissertations
The Executive Board annually awards prizes to young scientists who have completed their doctoral studies at Paderborn University with "summa cum laude" or "with distinction" . The total award money is 10,000 euros, which can be divided into several prizes. We are looking forward to your suggestions for the award!
The annual application deadline ends on 15th September.
Application requirements
The duration of the doctorate (max. 6 years/12 FS) and any publications will be taken into account as further assessment criteria.
The following application documents must be submitted digitally to at the suggestion of the supervising university lecturer (2 PDF files: 1. doctoral dissertation, 2. remaining documents):
- Copy of the submitted and assessed doctoral dissertation
- In the case of cumulative doctoral dissertations, submission of an additional summary of at least 6 pages*.
- Letter of recommendation from the supervisor (university lecturer)
- Copies of the dissertation reviews
- Copy of the doctoral certificate and the doctoral diploma
- Proof of doctoral studies: period and number of semesters
- Copy of the previous degree certificate (examination, Magister, Diplom, Master)
- Curriculum vitae:
- incl. date of completion of Staatsexamen, Magister, diploma or master's thesis
- incl. reference to breaks in doctoral studies with detailed justification
- incl. reference to the duration of parental leave with details of the exact period
- Declaration of consent for data processing (originally signed by the participant)
*For the evaluation of cumulative doctoral dissertations, the doctoral dissertation should contain a comprehensive introduction, a detailed research exposé with references to the own contributions in terms of content and scope of the underlying publications. If this is not evident from the doctoral dissertation, an additional summary of at least 6 pages is required as a supplement to the written dissertation as a further application document. The assessment of the necessity of submitting a separate summary is the responsibility of the proposing university lecturer.
The prize money totals 10,000 euros** and can be divided into several prizes.
The deadline for nominations is 15 September each year. There is no entitlement to consideration. Proposals should be submitted to the Office of the Committee for Research and Junior Academics (FK), Department 2/ 2.2, Ms Patz (katharina.patz@zv.upb.de), via the Dean's Office of the respective faculties. Please contact your Dean's Office for the deadline.
The proposal documents will then be forwarded by the respective Dean's Office to the FK office by 15 September each year. Proposals received late cannot be considered.
Doctoral certificates/certificates issued by 30 September of the year of the call for proposals can be submitted later.
The Presidential Board decides on the award in a free evaluation of the submitted applications on the recommendation of the FK and with the involvement of the Equal Opportunities Officer.
Acceptance of the prize money does not constitute an obligation for the honouree. We would also like to point out that there may be up to 8 weeks between the date of the award and the payment of the prize money.
**Please note that prize money may be subject to tax and social security contributions. A possible tax liability will be checked on a case-by-case basis.
